Corporate training is all about helping companies move forward and avoid problems while helping employees grow and learn. If you're thinking about becoming a trainer, you're about to enter a career that will be fulfilling and enjoyable.

To be the best corporate trainer you can, here are four tips to help your students get the most out of their sessions.

1. Control the Space

Trainers often rely on a variety of different spaces to conduct sessions, such as the client company's facility, a rented room, or shared spaces. But using unfamiliar spaces often puts your session on the wrong foot from the beginning. You may not have the resources you expected, technology might be different or not working properly, or the layout may not be ideal.

The best way to control your training session is to start by controlling the space. If you work in one general region, such as a metro area, rent a conference room specifically to use for sessions on a regular basis. You'll get to know the room, learn the quirks and specifics of the electronics, and be comfortable with where the amenities are in the building. If you travel around, arrange to rent same facilities when in town so you have a reliable space.

2. Use Technology

Modern technology can help make training more enjoyable and more productive. Make use of that technology to keep students involved and updated. You may want to start by sending some pre-work for upcoming students to complete online or via email, such as diagnostic surveys, reading material, or suggestions on how to prepare.

During the class, share computer screens so everyone can see steps rather than just hearing about them. Use videoconferencing to tie in remote learners or even talk with an expert. And add videos, music, sound bites, or even memes to help drive points home.

3. Keep It Interactive

If you simply stand in front of students and talk, they aren't likely to get much out of your session. Instead, focus on ways to involve students, get feedback, and hear their thoughts. Facilitate conversations rather than doing all the talking. Brainstorm ideas together. Break people into groups to practice or to do a small project.

Even when you need to just power through a section of material, keep students involved. You could poll the class verbally or with clicker-style response systems to see if they understand what you're teaching. Have students demonstrate a new skill by performing it with you in front of the group. Or ask them to prepare a few bullet points to list steps or concepts on paper. The options are varied and many.

4. Use Games

Learning games aren't just for the young. They keep everyone alert and involved, and they break up longer sessions nicely. Look for simple, fun, and nonconfrontational games in different styles. You could, for instance, use an ice-breaker game like having groups describe the company culture in only one word, playing two truths and a lie, or even having a short scavenger hunt.

Then, during the class, use games more related to what's being learned. Have groups come up with a few ways they could use certain material at their workplace. Or have them summarize the information on index cards (or write down each step separately and join them as a group). Want to loosen things up? Create a game show, such as Jeopardy! or Pyramid, using concepts from the class. Don't be afraid to be a little silly — it helps people learn better.

No matter what subject you're teaching to others, following these few tips will make your sessions the best they can be.
